Artists Create Original Art: When I was told the theme for the project was nature, I instantly thought of of monkeys. I decided to make a monkey for my project that is holding bananas in both hands. For the fur, I am going to put real grass on the monkey, since grass is straight from nature. Artist Develop Art Making skills: I have already learned about how to use the coil technique in my artworks but I have been doing it wrong. My teacher Ms Barnett showed me that my coils were too big which is why this technique has been so hard for me. I then started to use smaller coils which made progress go by faster on my artwork. |

I wanted to make a tennis racquet because tennis is my favorite sport. I really enjoy playing tennis so decided to show it through my artwork. I first made four long coils then connected them to form the frame of the racquet. Then I made two more coils to make the part where the frame connects to the handle. I lastly made one last coil to connect it to rest of the racquet. At first, I was wanting to make my project enormous like most of my other artworks have been. I then realized that it would be better to make it smaller because if it was large the feet would have fallen off easier. I began working on my artwork by making four duck feet. I rolled out a large piece of clay, then I cut out the shape of the feet. After that, I rolled four legs in the shape of a cylinder. Now that I had made the duck feet and the legs, I just combined them. Finally, I scored and slipped all of the feet on top of each other to make a tower. My artwork symbolizes the dead ducks of Taylor. When people see my artwork I want it to be a reminder to people in Taylor that there needs to be more protection of ducks. Many ducks are killed due to drivers that do not care about ducks. I decided to use glaze on my bowl because I wanted to mix freckled brown and turquoise together. Earlier this year I mixed the two together and it made a color that I really liked. So I knew it would look good on my bowl.
I got my inspiration to make my artwork from another classmate. As I was observing his work, I noticed it was quite large. I then realized that I wanted my artwork to be bigger than everyone else's.
I began the process of building my artwork by rolling out a circular platform. Now that I had a platform, I kept adding lots of could upon each other, smoothing them out as I went. When I felt I got high enough, I started to make my last coils go inward. The last thing i did was add many balls, which was my additive texture. I wanted people to view my artwork as a bowl with a substance flowing out of it. The balls i put on the sides and around the rim should represent the substance.

When I first started this project, I had no idea what drawing I wanted to put on my slab. I then thought of something that I love to do. So I drew a tennis racquet hitting a tennis ball and then transferred it onto the slab. Artist Solve Problems: I cut my sphere in half and as i was working on both of them, I noticed they were not identical. I realized I did not cut the sphere down the middle. I mashed the two pieces together to form sphere again. I cut the sphere correctly the second time and the pieces were the same. Artist Solve Problems:
As I was I was lifting my box, the lid fell off and hit the ground. The lid had a big dent on one side which made it not fit correctly to the bottom half of the box. I had to reform the lid and I had to use coils to fill in the gaps. Artist Develop Art Making Skills: When I started putting all the slabs together, I learned that I needed to use coils to attach them together. I didn't know I needed to attach them before, so that was why my box looked bad. I then made coils to fill in the gaps and my box looked much better. Artist Create Original Art:
When I was making my texture roller I didn't know what designs to make. I decided to make curvy and zig zag lines. I liked the way they looked when i rolled them onto the slab. Artist Solve Problems: When I had my slabs rolled, I started to try to smooth them out. I could not get the slabs to smooth out for the longest time. Soon I realized that I had been pressing down to hard with the tool that helps smooth clay which resulted in the clay looking rough. Then I started to apply less pressure on the slab resulting in the clay looking smoother. Artist Solve Problems:
When I made the handle foe the totem spoon I tried to make an arc form. It would not stop falling so i decided to put some clay at the bottom to make the arc stay. After a while, the the handle dried up and now the arc stays without any support. Artist Create Original Art: I used my own idea of of putting a tennis ball and a soccer ball at the end of the spoon so it wouldn't get in the way of my hand going on the handle. I also decided to make a cross that would fit on the handle so it wouldn't interfere with my hand going on the handle. Later on I thought of making my spoon bigger than everyone else's so I decided to make make the totem spoon enormous. Artist Reflect:
As I was making my totem spoon, I started to think of ideas to improve my artwork. I looked around the room and realized my spoon looked bad compared to other people's spoons. I saw that they put an arc on the handle of their spoon so I added that feature into my artwork. Artist Taking Risk: When I first started making my totem spoon, I made it really basic. Boring ideas were just be added to the spoon. So I decided to make a huge spoon and added better details to it. |
