Artist Solve Problems - When glazing my monkey artwork I used a brush that was too large for the areas I was trying to coat with glaze. This caused me to put a different color of glaze on another area that was covered with a different colored glaze. I had to keep scrubbing off the mistakes i made with a wet paper towel. I then decided to use a smaller brush to not repeat my mistakes. Artist Take Risks - I decided to roll out slabs and score and slip them together for stronger support for Yoda's head. I then thought i could carve out the inside of the body so the whole bust could dry faster and not blow up in the kiln. I have never done this before but I think this idea will work.

Artist Reflect - I have never made a bust before so I was not sure how to approach this project. I decided to just use the coil technique to start off and then I will just work my way up to the head. I then realized that that the coils could not support the rest of the bust so I had to start over and use a different technique. I then rolled out slabs and and scored and slipped them on to each other to have a stronger support for the head. Artist Communicate Through Their Work - I am glazing a monkey green to represent nature. My artwork represents the extinction of animals and how all life sacred. Humans to realize how important it is to protect nature.
1. Which artwork was your mot successful? My most successful artwork was my bowl. I was able to make it out of coils with no problems. I rolled out each coil to about the same length and put them on top of each other and smoothed them out, making the bowl taller until I reached the height that I preferred. Everything worked out as I planned. 2. Discuss one project where you felt you overcame the most obstacles? The project I did that I did where i had to overcome obstacles is my monkey artwork. Building the body and the head was very tough for me. I did not understand how to shape them. I also forgot to mist the monkey so it dried up. I had to cover the monkey in wet paper towels over one weekend so I could be able to work on it. Another mistake I did was not hollowing out the body, this caused the body split in half when it was in the kiln. 3. What 2 pieces show your growth as an artist? The two pieces that show my growth as an artist is my monkey and my mask artworks. While doing both projects, I had to overcome many obstacles and it was very tough. I think my creativity level has improved tremendously. While doing both of these, my thinking process of how to improve the artworks was better. I thought of things that I would have never done before in the previous years. 4 . I am glad the class has changed to this kind of format. I like the choice of doing what kind of artwork I want to do because If the teacher assigned something I would not like, I would find no enjoyment in working on the artwork and this would lead to the artwork not being made with much effort. There are many positives when working like this. Students would actually put forth effort and the quality of the artworks are better. I do not see any negatives when working like this. 2. 3.
Artists Create Original Art - While doing my mask artwork, it occurred to me that my mask looked to plain so I decided I needed to add some type of texture to make the mask look scarier. I then started to roll out textures onto the mask which made the mask look more creepy.
Artists Collaborate - A fellow student noticed that my goal of my mask artwork was to make it look as scary as possible. He then advised me to remove some of the bottom teeth to make room for a tongue to stick out. To make it look even scarier, I thought of splitting the tongue in half. Artists Develop Art Making Skills - When first approaching my mask artwork, I was going to just make a flat oval shape. I had no idea how i was going to get everything inside the edges of the oval to pop out so it wouldn't all be flat on the board. I then saw a new technique on my teachers art page called the soft mold method or "Drop" method. After reading about the technique, I then applied it to my artwork. I first rolled out a large slab the size of the board. Second, I took the slab off then put a bag of rice on the board and formed it the way i wanted the way my mask to look. Lastly i put the slab over it and dropped it on the ground. Now I didn't have a flat oval.
Artists Collaborate / Community - A fellow artist at my table shared a new technique with me which helped me get pass a tough obstacle in my artwork. He showed the soft mold method, i then did further research about the method on my teacher's website. I also saw that he made a scary mask which inspired me to do the same. However I planed on making mine much scarier than his adding more detail to mine. Artist Solve problems: I was confronted with two problems while making my nature project. The first problem was that I had trouble getting the head to stay on. I realized I had not scored and slipped right. I was not scoring enough of the head for it to stay on. After I did it the right way, the head stayed. The second problem was that I the had let the hands on my monkey dry too much. This was a problem because it would not allow me to add the bananas that I intended to make. I then got paper wet paper towels and wrapped them around the hands and left it like that overnight. The next day the hands were ready to be worked on.
Artist Collaborate: In class everyone went around the room and critiqued each others art work. My classmates wrote down very helpful tips to make my artwork better. They talked about how I needed to smooth areas out more and told me how the form is looking good.
Artists Have a Global Awareness of Art making: I looked up online of clay monkeys. After observing many peoples artwork, i concluded that my artwork would be better off being made in a cartoon style. |
